In this workshop you will learn to find more extension, alignment, and balance as a result of practice than ever before. The  sense of the body and particular nervous system issues will be felt in a new way and as a practitioner with scoliosis you will learn how to unravel the disorientation you feel when practicing yoga or when receiving adjustments and modifications in the asanas.  Teachers will learn to guide their students with scoliosis with a different set of directions.

HYBRID Yoga for Scoliosis — The Limbs

Scoliosis is usually discussed as a spinal condition and most modalities (PT, Pilates, etc.) approach it directly through the ribs and spine. But in yoga, much of the work is done through the periphery: the arms and legs. In this hybrid workshop, Deborah will work with the way uneven shoulder and hip sockets can better integrate with the arms and legs as a whole. Participants will also look at how the joints and bones of the limbs compensate through hyperextension, bowing and other asymmetries—as the body searches for balance.

Scoliosis: Yoga for the Heart and Lungs

Due to the curve and concavity in the thoracic rib cage, those of us with scoliosis are more prone to heart and lung conditions or weaknesses than others. Many of us have conditions like Mitral Valve Prolapse for instance which may need eventual surgery. But we can use the techniques which help our curves through yoga such as breathing into the thoracic concavity, changing the position of the ribs in the concavity by side bending and stretching specific intercostals and stuck areas in the diaphragm to increase our breathing capacity and strengthen the heart. We can change blood flow through inversions and increase or slow down the heart rate/respiration with backbends, forward bends and pranayama.

When we have a back injury or asymmetry, collapse and atrophy weaken us due to our imbalances. Often those who suffer from injuries or pain are told to strengthen the abdomen or "the core" to heal, but workouts building one muscle group can often lock in asymmetry and ultimately create more imbalances and pain. Once we start healing the body with good alignment, strength is needed to maintain that alignment, to rebuild confidence in the body mind, and to sustain internal lift. Where do we begin? What is strength if it is not just muscle building? and what techniques and skills are needed to build strength symmetrically?

California Yoga Center is very pleased to welcome back Deborah Wolk for 3 sessions on Yoga for Scoliosis. Even if you have taken workshops with her in the past at CYC, this series will be more targeted towards specific issues and practice. Study with Deborah for the full weekend or sign up for separate sessions. The 3-session workshop will include an anatomy lecture, an exploration of yoga, scoliosis and the nervous system as well as in depth on yoga, scoliosis and the organ body. All sessions will be recorded. Registered students will have access for two (2) weeks.

As a way to bring Barry’s friends and family together along with our own students and to share with you the life-changing practice that meant so much to Barry, we are happy to offer a donation-based therapeutic yoga class taught as a benefit by Deborah Wolk in Barry’s memory. The class will be geared for any level even if you have never practiced yoga before. Deborah will teach some of Barry’s favorite poses and will explain how they helped him. After class she’ll keep the Zoom meeting on so we can all meet and chat and have a little memorial gathering. We are looking forward to meeting you and thanking you all in person.

Yoga for Scoliosis & Sensing the Bones

My workshops at Living Yoga (Denver) will focus on a mix of Anatomy and Yoga for Scoliosis. The first day will be straightforward work with Yoga for Scoliosis. The 2nd day will be the anatomy of bone and specifically the bones of those of us with scoliosis. We will begin with a lecture using sensory anatomy in which we find landmarks in the body, sensing our curves and bone shape and learning to see asymmetry in others if you are teaching. In both workshops we'll spend the last 90 mins exploring what we have learned and applying it to asana.
