Yoga and Scoliosis – The Limbs part 3
Scoliosis is usually discussed as a spinal condition and most modalities (PT, Pilates, etc.) approach it directly through the ribs and spine. But in yoga, much of the work is done through the periphery: the arms and legs. Why do we emphasize the limbs in our approach?
Functional scoliosis is often caused by an external imbalance: leg length or a structural imbalance in the arms. The converse is also true: with idiopathic scoliosis, the structural spinal asymmetry is reflected in the limbs due to nervous system imbalances and use. These asymmetries in turn create instability and differences side to side.
When a yoga practitioner with scoliosis approaches changing these patterns, compensation in the limbs must be addressed. Learning to use the limbs more evenly helps the scoliotic nervous system and musculoskeletal system reintegrate and can create positive change all the way to the curvy central axis.
In this hybrid workshop, Deborah will work with the way uneven shoulder and hip sockets can better integrate with the arms and legs as a whole. Participants will also look at how the joints and bones of the limbs compensate through hyperextension, bowing and other asymmetries—as the body searches for balance. Using this awareness, students will find a methodical yet powerful process through yoga asana; creating a pathway toward centeredness without surrendering to these compensations in the limbs.
This workshop will be helpful for students of all levels. All asymmetric bodies are welcome including those without scoliosis and those with spinal fusions. Yoga teachers and bodyworkers interested in helping their students/clients with scoliosis are also encouraged to attend.
What we’ll be working with:
Sensory Anatomy of the limbs in the context of scoliosis
Seeing the Asymmetric body through a holistic lens
Connecting the limbs to the shoulder and hip sockets
Connecting the limbs to the center of the trunk and the diaphragm
Seeing and working with typical scoliotic asymmetries of the arms and legs such as bowleg/knock-knee, Right/left asymmetries of the feet (ie: one larger foot, one larger bunion, one bent elbow
Understanding and addressing hyperextension
Sensing the head (tongue) and tail as limbs.
